Visiting Japan after approximately 2 years for the promotional event of TV drama TWSSG. Around 3000 fans gathered at the Kansai international airport which was unprecedented. Approximately 35,000 people participated in the event in Kyocera dome Osaka the next day alone. Such a scene, with the nation’s 13 cinemas broadcasting live and so on, this clearly demonstrates that his great popularity remains unaltered.

However, what we have seen is the stereotyped reports that only portray his sincere smiles to the fans. What kind of being is he really? What is occupying his mind? What does he do to pass the time? We attempt to get closer to his true nature.

I believe that a “top CEO” and a “supreme leader” appear to be similar, but they are different in substantive areas. The so called “top CEO” is a person who would disregard small matters in order to decisively aim for a large(r) goal. I believe comparatively speaking, a “supreme leader” would be a person without a doubt who would fulfil his obligations to even the smallest of matters, in order to persevere to his principles.”

Very impressive. This is our first question in the interview. BYJ answered it fluently without hesitation. He is such a person who would have been repeatedly studied what sort of image a CEO and a leader should possess!

● Indeed, the BYJ of this day has counted the minutes and the seconds lapsed in order to undertake more than a dozen of media interviews. From the waiting sceneries which heave into sight from the hotel window, that have turned into beautiful night scenes by dusk. No matter how high an actor’s level of tolerance is, one would display exhaustion, even a touch of unhappiness from the continuous emergence of the media. This is unavoidable. Therefore we decided to keep a straight face.

However BYJ, whom was standing right in front of us, put aside our eagerness to start the interview. He greeted us and shook hands with each one of us with polished manners. His friendly smiling face, his comfortable, calm and unflustered etiquette have this calming effect to the present surroundings. Immediately, he set the pace for the others to follow. What an amazingly talented individual he is.

In such a way, the interview began. Firstly we briefly introduced ourselves, and then we told him that the usual audience of “GQ Japan” was generally entrepreneurs and businessmen. The readers’ average age is around 35 years old, just like him. He was listening and nodding at the same time. His “em~” sound was quite different to the low but soft voice that we have heard in the TV dramas and movies. The “em.. em..” sounds are quite charming and in high tones.

The first question was, “portraying the king Damdeuk of Koguryo in TWSSG, what does the study of King Damdeuk and the modern entrepreneurs have in common?” The answer of his speech is in the introduction of this article. His instantaneous judgement of what sort of answer that the GQ readers would be expecting, has acted as the occasion serves. Next, the interview continues as follows:

“The “supreme leader” may or may later with no alternative but to disregard the small matters. But initially he/she should not be willing to disregard them. I trust that a “supreme leader” and a “top CEO” may decisively reach the same result, but the process involved into what sort of considerations, going through what sort of emotional experiences, in order to achieve the same result would be different.”

While sharing his thoughts, the warmth and passion of his fast pace were obvious as he accomplished his words.

“Just then, I use the phrase ‘the same result’, but the so-called ‘result’ as we understand it, would be the result that we see in the short term. I believe if we maintain a long term vision, how would we view the matter and with what sort of emotions? Therefore the result would become slightly different”.

These are the results of your thought processes after playing the role in the TV drama?

He replied humbly: “Yes, it is (laughter). Because I had the whole two years to become the character in order to portray him. Therefore I have given much thought regarding what sort of qualities a true leader should possess.”

Investing 6.4 billion yen in the production of TWSSG which is an unprecedented production cost in S.Korean TV. There were many large scale action scenes, many injuries one after another, a finger injury, followed by a shoulder injury. From the opening ceremony of the shooting, till the last few days of the final production, finally his knee was seriously injured.

Then, how did you uplift yourself?

What is there to uplift oneself, everything becomes a must do task. If I could get out of doingit, I think I would say, “I can’t do it, because it hurts” (laughter). From the moment I got injured[oh no, I’m physically seriously injured, this is a very serious situation] my body is suffering from a major attack. I couldn’t move for 20-30 minutes. I could sense my body was trembling. However I can’t go to the hospital. If I was to go there, they would say, surely no more movements, please be hospitalised. No more shooting. If I would try to continue with the shooting, they would say, you must wear a cast. However I thought I won’t be able to concentrate on shooting giving such a state. I simply could not do it. If that is the case, it would be best not to know my state of injury. I took pain killers, injections/on drips. I wrapped the area with four layers of bandages. This is how I managed to finish the shooting for around another 10 days….” It was said that while he was giving himself shots, he repeatedly poked himself with the needle while on the drip. Since he was in so much pain, BYJ was meeting the whole cast with distorted face. Ah..hahaha however, how do you feel now after you have played the role of the king during the 2 years? He chose his words and answered sincerely: “Of course, still staying in my mind. Can’t I continue to stay in the state of the King (laughter). Therefore, the first thing is to erase the feeling completely. But, just like King Damdeuk, even more diligently, living with a sense of responsibility, accumulating good deeds via charity work, having more consideration towards the people around, caring for them. Caring for the work/products that have remained in my heart, even until now.” Fierce Damdeuk, the great expander of territories as recorded in the history of the glory era of Koguryo, was somehow portrayed as a person who loves his people in the TV drama. Perhaps, BYJ himself might possess the original characteristics and had a feeling of sympathy in order to add the profound love, kindness and unshakable strength to the character of King Damdeuk. You devote your entire energy into your work, occasionally taking a rest might be also required ? I think taking a rest appears to be the reward for completing your work. Because you have put in so much effort, being playful should be fine, even having a few drinks (of alcohol) should be fine. But there are consequences, as though excessive drinking of today would lead to no more alcohol for the next two months (laughter).” Have you ever had too much to drink? About 2-3 times a year (laughter) Do you prefer wine? “I used to like drinking wine. But recently I began to consider making wine. Photography is also a long standing interest as a hobby. But recently I’m not only limited to taking pictures, the use of photos in the context of other works that I intend to carry out. For instance photo colourisation, colouring drawing and so on. Anyway, whether it’s work or play, doing your best with every moment you have. I thought isn’t this the best way to live life? Frankly speaking, this was asked in previous interviews, what will happen in 10 years time? After the serious injury, I don’t even know whether the shooting can still carry on tomorrow. I began to think it is very difficult to come up with a plan for 10 years on. I feel that even if I have a plan for the next 1-2 year, I still would not know what will happen tomorrow. Therefore, I cherish every present moment. For example, we are now face to face, I think let’s indulge in this moment of joy, do our best to one’s heart content." As an interviewee, BYJ was answering questions sincerely and at the same time taking notes. We stated that: “We were concerned about time, hence the final question…." which provoked an affectionate smile on his face and he said: “no problem, 2 more questions”. One could sense his thoughtfulness to the interviewer and his full commitment to the success of the interview. There was no hiding, no pretending and all very honest answers. He is kind hearted. In addition, after seeing him in person, surprisingly we discover his beautiful facial feastures. He is tall with a small face. His body is slender but masculine. The entire team without exception have fallen fondly in love with him, including the male GQ editors. Towards the end, we were taking pictures one by one with him. “Male as well”? we asked. The end result were photos of two(s) with arms across over each others’ shoulders tightly. Such a mind easing job, with a superb being in front we were unable to suppress our passion and creativity arose spontaneously. So far he has inspired our energy 200% and towards a great success in outstanding works. Bae Yong Joon ssi, can we request your presence to work with us again?

ผมเชื่อว่าไม่ว่าจาเป็นผู้นำชั้นยอดหรือซีอีโอชั้นเยี่ยมต่างก็ต้องการไปถึงจุดมุ่งหมายที่วางไว้เหมือนกันแต่จะแตกต่างกันในกระบวนการการพิจารณา ว่าจะต้องนำประเด็นใดมาประกอบการพิจารณา ประสบการณ์ทางอารมณ์ความรู้สึกจะถูกนำมาใช้ในการตัดสินใจหรือไม่ แม้จะมีเป้าหมายเหมือนกันแต่กระบวนการก็อาจจะต่างกันเล็กน้อย

คุณมีวิธีให้กำลังใจตัวเองอย่างไรคะ

สิ่งที่ผมทำเพื่อให้กำลังใจตัวเองคือ การบอกกับตัวเองว่าทุกอย่างล้วนเป็นสิ่งที่ต้องทำ ถ้าผมสามารถหลีกหนีจากตรงนั้นได้ ผมคงจะบอกว่า ผมทำไม่ได้แล้วครับ มันเจ็บมาก (หัวเราะ) นับตังแต่วินาทีแรกที่ผมได้รับบาดเจ็บ(ไม่สินะ ผมได้รับบาดเจ็บอย่างรุนแรงมาก)มันเป็นสถานการณ์ที่เลวร้ายจริงๆ) ตัวของผมถูกกระแทกอย่างแรง ผมไม่สามารถขยับเขยื้อนได้นานกว่ายี่สิบนาที ผมรู้ตัวเลยว่าตัวผมสั่นไปหมด แต่ผมไม่สามารถไปโรงพยาบาลได้เพราะถ้าผมไปโรงพยาบาลเขาต้องบอกแน่ๆ ว่าห้ามเคลื่อนไหว คุณต้องนอนโรงพยาบาลหรือไม่ก็ หรือถ้าผมจะถ่ายทำต่อก็ต้องใส่เฝือกซึ่งผมคิดว่าผมคงไม่มีสมาธิในการแสดงแน่ๆถ้าต้องอยู่มนสภาพนั้น สู้ไม่รู้ดีกว่าว่าได้รับบาดเจ็บแค่ไหน ผมต้องทานยาแก้ปวด ฉีดยาและหยดยา ผมต้องพันบริเวณที่ได้รับบาดเจ็บด้วยผ้าพันแผลถึงสี่ชั้น นี่คือคำตอบว่าทำไมผมจึงสามารถแสดงต่อไปได้นานอีกเกือบสิบวัน

มีคนเล่าว่าเมื่อตอนที่เขาต้องฉีดยาให้ตัวเองเขาต้องเอาเข็มแทงตนเองตั้งหลายครั้งเพื่อฉีดยา แต่เพราะเขาเจ็บปวดมาก ดังนั้นเขาจึงเข้าฉากกับนักแสดงคนอื่นๆด้วยใบหน้าเหยเก อ่า ฮ่า

ตอนนี้คุณรู้สึกอย่างไรบ้างหลังจากที่ต้องรับบทเป็นกษัตริย์ยาวนานมาถึงสองปี เขาไตร่ตรองในการเลือกคำพูดและตอบอย่างซื่อๆว่า

แน่นอนครับ ความรู้สึกนั้นยังคงตราตรึงในใจผม ผมสามารถอยู่ในฐานะกษัตริย์ต่อไปอีกสักหน่อยไม่ได้เหรอ (หัวเราะ) ดังนั้นสิ่งแรกที่ควรทำคือลืมความรู้สึกดังกล่าวให้หมด แต่คงเหมือนกับทัมด็อกซึ่งแม้จะปราดเปรื่อง มีความรับผิดชอบต่อหน้าที่ ทำแต่ความดีให้แก่สังคม นึกถึงแต่ประชาชน ใส่ใจและแคร์ต่อบุคคลรอบข้าง ยังไม่สามรถลืมความรู้สึกแบบนี้ได้เลย ผมเองก็เช่นกันยังคงจำความรู้สึกนั้นได้และมันยังอยู่ในใจแม้ในขณะนี้ก็ตาม

กษัตริย์ทัมด็อกผู้ซึ่งขยายอาณาเขตออกไปอย่างกว้างขวางจนได้รับการบันทึกไว้ในประวิติศาสตร์ว่าเป็นยุคที่รุ่งเรืองที่สุดของโคคุเรียวถูกถ่ายทอดออกมาในรูปของพระราชาซึ่งรักประชาชนมากมาย บางทีอาจจะเป็นเพราะตัวตนที่แท้จรืงของ เบยงจุนมีลักษณะบุคลิกแบบเดียวกับที่เห็นในละครและเขามีความรู้สึกเห็นอกเห็นใจผู้อื่นจึงทำให้เขาสามารถแสดงความรักอันละเอียดอ่อนและความเข้มแข็งที่ไม่มีหวั่นสั่นคลอนของทัมต๊อกออกมาได้ดี

ผมเคยคิดว่าการพักผ่อนคือการให้รางวัลกับตัวเองหลังจากที่เสร็จสิ้นการทำงานอย่างหนัก เนื่องจากคุณต้องทุมเทอย่างหนัก การผ่อนคลายหรือทำอะไรสนุก เช่น การไปนั่งดื่มเหล้าก็ช่วยได้ แต่ก็มีข้อเสียตามมาก็คือ ถ้าหากคุณตื่มหนักมากใ นเดือนนี้คุณอาจจะต้องหยุดดื่มในเดือนต่อไปแทน(หัวเราะ)

คุณเคยดื่มหนักๆไหม

เคยดื่มหนักๆประมาณสองถึงสามครั้งต่อปีครับ(หัวเราะ)

คุณชอบไวน์ไหม

ผมเคยชอบดื่มไวน์ เมื่อเร็วๆนี้ผมยังเคยคิดจะผลิตไวน์เลย การถ่ายรูปเป็นงานอดิเรกที่ผมสนใจมานานแล้ว แต่ตอนนี้ผมไม่ได้จำกัดอยู่แค่การถ่ายรูปเป็นงานอดิเรกเท่านั้นผมยังสนใจเรื่องการให้สีหรือการวาดภาพสีน้ำอีกด้วย อย่างไรก็ตาม ไม่ว่าจะเป็นงานหรือการเล่นสนุก เราควรทำทุกวินาทีที่เรามีอยู่ให้ดีที่สุด ผมคิดว่ามันไม่ใช่วิธีที่ดีที่สุดในการดำเนินชีวิต ผมเคยถูกถามคำถามนี้มาแล้วในการสัมภาษณ์ครั้งก่อน และคงจะถูกถามด้วยคำถามแบบเดียวกันนี้อีกแน่ๆในอนาคต

BYJ received armful of presents filled with sincere hearts from fans from all over the world, as well as from Asia of course, a day before his birthday.

On 29, BYJ will greet 37th birthday per Korean (way of counting) age

BYJ's agency BOT, on telephone conversation with Money Today Star news in the afternoon on 28, a day prior to BYJ's birthday, told, "Diverse gifts have already arrived at our office that were presented to Mr. BYJ from fans in entire Asian region including China, Taiwan, & Japan and various parts of world as well as domestic fans of course." Continuing on, saying that "Some overseas fans have personally visited office in Seoul and delivered gift to be given to Mr. BYJ,", he told "BYJ appreciate very much sincere hearts of domestic and overseas fans."

BOF source added, "At present, Mr BYJ will not hold any official event related to his birthday tomorrow (29), because only a little time has passed since he undersent shoulder surgery.

On the other hand, BYJ enjoyed pleasure of (Inc) Key East (CEO Pyo Jongrok), a Kosdaq registered company where he is the major stock holder, to formally obtain copyright to make a drama of a popular Japanese comic 'Devine Water Drop' in Korean language, from Japan's Kodansha on 28, a day prior to his birthday.

A source at the Key East told in the morning on that day that "The 'Devine Water Drop' is a Japanese comic, which acclerated domestic and overseas wind hot wind as over 2.2 million books were sold in Japan and 2 million books were sold in Korea," and "Although many domestic and overseas companies has been interested in copyright of its original book all the while, because it is the best seller work that attracted world-wide popularity, Key East concluded a contract on copyright for making it a drama in Korean language with Kodansha on 28."

Continuing on, this source added, "We were able to conclude big project contract where everyone in Asia was interested in," and "We will do all our best (for the drama) to be able to make another good energizer again in domestic entertainment business, based on good original work that moved many people."

As the Key East, where BYJ is the major stock holder, got the copyright of the 'Devine Water Drop', for making drama in Korean language, the opinion is that BYJ's appearance in this drama was actually confirmed also.
