On Yong Joon & Damdeok

These were aspects that Yong Joon had been worrying about since the beginning.
Young leading actors generally do not accept roles of playing the king. Once they've accepted the role, then it's inevitable that they will have to portray the king in his older stage. That is to say they will have to show an image of them looking middle age or even older with the moustache and/or beard. Once they play an older king, their image will be affected drastically. Sometimes, they will even lose their youthful image because of this. And there's also often such talk that once you've started to play the role of a king, then that will mark the start of a phase in the actor's career to start playing middle-aged roles.
Song Il-kook played Jumong. But in the TV drama Jumong, they had chosen to dramatize the part where Jumong became the king, the drama was not primarily on Jumong as the king. I think this is (precisely) the difficulty of a 24-episode drama. For the first time in Korea, Yong Joon played Hwan Woong and then he also played Damdeok. Generally speaking, the young actors will be like this once they play the roles of historical heroes. Period dramas in Korea are usually at least 50 episodes, and it's hardly surprisingly to even go beyond 100 episodes.
In summary, no matter who it was who had played Damdeok would be criticized as being unsuitable and inappropriate in the first 30 episodes. If the actor acted well, then such talk about him being unsuitable would generally decrease or disappear after 30 episodes. But for Yong Joon, there was no such criticism even from the beginning. The Damdeok that Yong Joon had portrayed was entirely different from the typical impression that the Koreans had of Damdeok; but despite this, there was still no criticism about YJ-DD.
I think this was because Yong Joon's acting was really good. For instance, in episode 12:
Jumoochi displayed disobedience towards Damdeok, and said something that went against the king's wishes. But if you would look into Jumoochi's eyes, you would be able to see that his eyes had given him away; he had already acknowledged and accepted Damdeok as the king. And, although Hogae also did not admit and face up to the fact that Damdeok was king, but from Hogae's eyes, those eyes had already acknowledged and accepted Damdeok, the king.
I think even in the process of acting, the other actors had also accepted that Yong Joon was Damdeok. I think this was clearly shown in their eyes, and the entire aura and feel of the drama seemed to demonstrate and exhibit this.
